Manning Cup heats up

THE FINAL matches in the second round of the Pepsi/Sports Plus Manning Cup kick off this afternoon and Excelsior, Wolmer's, Norman Manley and defending champions Bridgeport are hot favourites to advance to Saturday's semi-finals.

Pre-season favourites Charlie Smith should struggle to reach the final four as they will have to beat the Lebert Halliman-coached Excelsior who are playing disciplined and attacking football and need only a draw to reach Saturday's final four.

In other big games, Group 3 teams Bridgeport and Norman Manley will chase three points against Kingston College and last year's beaten finalists Spanish Town respectively. The same goes for Group 2 leaders Wolmer's against Dunoon at Emmett Park.

Wins for Bridgeport and Norman Manley would see them through to the semi-finals as Group winner and best second-placed team with seven points respectively.

The Manning Cup final is set for November 23. The Walker Cup semi-finals will be played on November 27 with the final three days later.
