SINGER COMPANY, more commonly known as the PriceMaster, has pitched in with a $50,000 contribution to help send the national men's softball team to the Pan American Championships which start tomorrow.
The team departed yesterday for Guatemala City, Guatemala, for the event which culminates on November 22.
This is one the highest level men's softball competitions in the world with the national teams from four of the top five countries being represented. They are Canada, the United States, Argentina and Mexico. Defending champions Cuba unexpectedly pulled out of the competition.
The top eight teams from the tournament automatically qualify for the Pan American Games to be held in the Dominican Republic in 2003. But most importantly, the best five teams will qualify for the Softball World Championship to be held in New Zealand next year.
The 17 teams have been divided into two groups. Jamaica's Group A includes Canada, Venezuela, Bahamas, hosts Guatemala, Panama and Ecuador. Group B includes the US, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Argentina, Puerto Rico, Colombia, El Salvador and Honduras.
