Burning issues that needs addressing
published: Thursday | November 14, 2002

THE EDITOR, Sir:

MAY I be permitted to make the following comments?

1. Your editorial in the issue of a recent Sunday Gleaner was dedicated solely to Mr. Seaga's unsuitability at age 72 years to lead the Jamaica Labour Party;

2. Mr. Seaga is more than capable of defending himself without any help from me, but whilst you are harping on Mr. Seaga's age, what of our own Mr. Seymour Mullings who is no teenager but is very much in service in the United States, or the 74 year old Walter Mondale of the US who recently ran for Senate selection?

3. I would much prefer to see your editorial clout at work in some terrible areas of poverty, hunger and hopelessness which many of our countrymen are facing as I write;

a) The number of people rummaging in garbage bags for food has increased dramatically over the last six weeks (I have to personally put back what they have left outside the cans each morning at my gate);

b) The number of beggars has tripled in the past two to three months - one is besieged at all times on the streets and at our gates;

c) The towns and environs of Christiana and Mandeville to name but two have taken on ghetto-like appearances - tee shirts and other items of clothing displayed on rails for sale - no civic pride seems to be anywhere anymore;

e) Soon one will be unable to do any travel by road from anywhere in the vicinity of Williamsfield to Porus en route to Kingston because of the threat of the steadily rising waters - because apparently the powers that be and their engineers constructed a road through a river!

f) The possibility of the breaking out of diseases in places like Harmons in South Manchester.

These, Mr. Editor in my humble opinion, are some of the burning issues which need to be highlighted.

I am, etc.,

CHRISTIANA M. KNIGHT
