Soldier's gun found
published: Thursday | November 14, 2002

THE POLICE have recovered the gun stolen from Corporal Hugh Thomas of the Jamaica Defence Force, who was shot dead by a gunman on Monday night in Allman Town, Kingston 4.

Corporal Thomas's licensed 9mm Taurus pistol with serial number TTA670803, was found Tuesday evening during police operations in Kingston 14. The gun was found with 15 cartridges in a black bag on a wall on Regent Street. No one was arrested, the police said.

The off-duty soldier was gunned down around 7:25 p.m. Monday, while he stood with a group of men on Prince of Wales Street, Allman Town, near to a section of the community known as "Death Trap." His pistol was stolen by a man who shot him in the face with a handgun after emerging from a white Toyota Corolla car. The gunman escaped.

The Allman Town police say the soldier's death may have resulted from events which occurred after a traffic accident in the area earlier. It had involved a Suzuki jeep, the tyres of which were slashed after the accident. The driver was reportedly attacked and the body of the vehicle damaged.
