THE EDITOR, Sir:
A COUPLE of weeks ago I was travelling from Kingston to St. Elizabeth, and was surprised at the time it took for me to reach Mandeville.
Usually it would have taken me over three hours but with the new highway this was done in half the time with me bypassing Old Harbour.
Although I got to my destination much faster, there were a few drawbacks. One was the speeding of other motorists on the road. This I'm sure can be rectified
by increasing the police highway patrols.
However, the major drawback was the number of dead animals on the road - two cows, two dogs, and a goat - on my return trip the following morning. The dead animals, with skid marks and broken glass about them, were evidence of accidents happening the night before, caused by speeding, poor lighting and the owners of the animals allowing them to roam the roads freely.
Although there might not have been any human fatality in these accidents, I'm asking the authorities to take the necessary steps to correct these problems and save lives.
Increase patrols to curtail speeding, place lights on the roadway to improve visibility, and impound stray animals on our roadways. These, I'm sure will make the highway much safer and will help to decrease the number of road fatalities.
I am etc.,
