Family waiting 15 years for Coroner's Inquest
published: Friday | November 15, 2002

ALTHOUGH EDLAN Dalton Sirjue, a Kingston businessman was shot and killed 15 years ago his children and relatives are still waiting for a Coroner's Inquest to be held.

Rose-Anne Sirjue, the deceased's daughter says they have been facing difficulties in having their father's estate disposed of because of the absence of a Coroner's report.

Mr. Sirjue, of 81 Border Avenue, St. Andrew , was shot and killed on October 13, 1983. He died intestate.

Miss Sirjue said after being frustrated by the long delay, she demonstrated last week in front of the Ministry of Justice, 2 Oxford Road, Kingston 5. "I stood quietly holding placards which read "15 years and no Coroner's Inquest in my dad's death," she said. She said she explained to curious passers-by the reason for the protest and they were very sympathetic.

She said she had been to the Coroner's Court in Kingston and was told that there was no file concerning her father's death. According to Miss Sirjue, the matter went before Coroner Hazel Leslie (now retired) some years ago and the then Coroner said further information was needed concerning the "fragments from the bullet," but the case was not mentioned in court again.

Miss Sirjue says she plans to seek Chief Justice Lensley Wolfe's assistance in the matter and is now awaiting a date for an appointment with him.

"My mother died two years ago without knowing what the jury's verdict would have been in her husband's death," Miss Sirjue said.

"There definitely needs to be a closure to the matter," Miss Sirjue added.

The Gleaner checked at the Coroner's Court's office yesterday and was told that the Sirjue file was not at that office.
