Portmore environmental development plan all set
published: Saturday | November 16, 2002

SPANISH TOWN:
ALL IS now set for the implementation of a major environmental development plan for the Portmore community as residents of that community endorsed a 10-point plan of action for the community at an environmental development seminar held on Tuesday, November 12 at the Wild Flower Restaurant in Portmore.

Several stakeholders in the Portmore community including citizens associations and the business community endorse the plan put forward by the Portmore Environmental and Civic Awareness programme giving it their full support.

Chairman of the Portmore Development Committee (PDC) Mr. Ransford White commended the plan but noted that the plan will only be successful if the people of Portmore are granted the long awaited municipal status such as the one enjoyed by the St. Catherine Parish Council.

PECAP Director of Projects Mr. Milton Patterson said the 10-point plan of action include the planting of 5,000 fruit and ornamental trees, the publication of a quarterly environmental news letter, a major schools education programme, placing of environmental information signs, and opening of the Portmore Environmental Information Centre.

The plan, he said, also included the zoning of Portmore into eight environmental districts and a major beautification campaign involving the development of several roundabouts.

Principal of Portmore Community College Mrs. Karen Kennedy also pledged her full support to the training of 40 community environmental mentors which will become trainers of trainers in the community.

The seminar was sponsored by the Mount Royal Development Company and the Enchanted Community Environmental Space Care Project.
