SPLASHES OF colour, paint, glitter and lots of hair. Such was the scene at the hair exposition put on by the National Association of Hairdressers and Cosmetologists' (NAHC) last Sunday night.

Scores of hairdressers, hairdressing industry workers and other hair enthusiasts assembled in the Jamaica Pegasus to witness the seventh staging of the annual trade show and exhibition and were not disappointed.

One segment of the hair styling competition, the Fantasy section, featured many hairstyles of varied colours and the models adorned their bodies with body paint and glitter. This section also revealed some very interesting hairstyles. There was the Wedding Cake which as the name implies, was a wedding cake, yes three tiers and all, said to signify love, courtship and marriage. Then there was a tower, national flag, banana...the styles were as colourful as they were varied, but in the end there could only be one winner.

The hairstyles which were judged on creativity, originality, model's presentation and stylist's professionalism, were placed in three sections, Fantasy, Nostalgia and High Fashion.

There were ten competitors in the Fantasy section, the Fantasy Fan, Burning Fantasy, Fantasia, The Patriot, The Tower, Fantasy Lily, Pina Colada in Fantasy, Banana Tree, Lightning Bolt, and of course the Wedding Cake. In the Nostalgia section; Curly Sue and The Vintage, and in the High Fashion segment were Razor on the Edge, Asylum, En Vogue and two other entrants.

The three judges for the night were Noel Shirley, land surveyor, Pat Parchment, cosmetologist and Julius Douglas, sales and marketing consultant and from the time the first competitor hit the stage, it was evident the judges had their work cut out for them.

The big winner for the night though, was Georgiana Johnson of Geo's Hair 2002 whose hairstyles The Vintage and En Vogue clinched the Nostalgia and High Fashion titles respectively and Burning Fantasy took second place in the Fantasy section. The other winners were Fantasy Fan and Pina Colada, which took first and third places respectively in the Fantasy section and Asylum which placed third in the High Fashion section.
