Next generation vs next election

THE EDITOR, Sir:
I HAVE read an interesting letter in your daily, dated November 8 under the caption, "Statesman vs. politician" from a reader in Ocho Rios. He has rightly drawn a distinction between a true statesman and a politician. He says "a statesman sees into the future while a politician looks at the present".
After going through the letter, I am reminded of a statement about this distinction, which blends brevity with a pinch (or let me say a punch) of satire on the present day professional politicians.
"A statesman thinks of the next generation, whereas a politician thinks of the next election." I believe, this statement is a rule with a very few exceptions. Could we help ?
