RETIRED CUSTOMS clerk, Trevor Adamson, left the Diabetes Association headquarters at Downer Avenue, St. Andrew smiling on Saturday.
Not only had one of his worries been dismissed, but he had managed to do the necessary health checks at discounted prices.
"I was having symptoms and I was informed by someone that I could get a check for diabetes to see if I'm diabetic. I have done it and they said that I'm okay," the 59-year-old told The Gleaner.
The grounds of the Diabetes Association of Jamaica came alive on Saturday as scores of persons turned out for its annual health fair, the culmination of activities for National Diabetes Week.
By noon, vehicles were crammed into every available parking space close to the Association's headquarters and activities were swinging with a steady trickle of persons who took advantage of various price discounts to do eye screenings, blood sugar tests, kidney tests, bone density tests, foot screenings, nutritional talks and other events.
A pleased branch manager, Nola Rookwood, told The Gleaner that about 200 persons visited the Association before noon and another 200 were expected as the evening progressed.
With children at their sides or in their arms, people also walked from one display booth to another, picking up leaflets about diabetes, learned about products and services for persons with diabetes and sampled products which usually boost the body.
National Diabetes Week ran from November 10 to 16 under the theme "Your Eyes and Diabetes: Don't Lose Sight of the Risk".
Activities for the week included diabetes presentations and eye screenings at MegaMart in Portmore; St. Richard's Catholic Church, Red Hills Road, and Norwich Primary school in Hanover.
