Crime out of control
published: Wednesday | November 20, 2002

THE EDITOR, Sir:

It is clear for all to see that this government has not grasped or does not truly understand the serious nature of the problems gripping the country.

Crime is out of control and Jamaica is the real victim. Every fibre of this country has been ripped to shreds. There is no respect for human life anymore and yet our Members of Parliament and Cabinet members sit seemingly oblivious to this crisis. They are either unable to or do not want to develop a solution to this clear and present danger.

As a result, the future of this country and by extension the future of our children, is in jeopardy. I have often said that the next 10 years of our country's future will determine what history will record of this beautiful place and if that really be the case then we are in deep trouble.

Mr. Minister of National Security, please understand that by providing the security forces with new cars and motor bikes you have not solved the problem of crime. In fact, much of the promises that you have made since taking up your current portfolio have not materialised.

I have used this medium before to call upon government to deliver to the people what they promised they would. I again reinforce that call and insist that the talk shop ends now and the mandate that the people of this country entrusted to you all, be delivered to them. Nothing less will be accepted and history will record your success or failure. As a young person I have a vested interest in the future of my nation and I am prepared to do whatever it takes to reclaim Jamaica from the hands of the outlaws who reign supreme.

That said, I will not be blinded by allegiance to any party over and above this nation of which I am a proud citizen. If government cannot or will not do anything to stop lawlessness in this country then the voice of the people will be heard. It had better be prepared to deal with that consequence.

I am, etc.,

ANTOINE NEMBHARD

Executive Member of

the People's National Party

(Region 3) Youth Organisation
