Wolmer's, KC face-off
published: Wednesday | November 20, 2002

By Anthony Foster, Freelance Writer

WOLMER'S WILL be looking to advance to their second Corporate Area schoolboy football final when they face Kingston College in the Walker Cup semi-finals at Tony Spaulding Sports Complex starting at 1:00 p.m. today.

The day's second game will see Charlie Smith having another shot at the Corporate Area's second schoolboy title when they face-off with last year's beaten Manning Cup finalists Spanish at 3:00 p.m. in the doubleheader.

Wolmer's coach, Michael Francis, said he anticipates a keenly-contested game this afternoon because of the rivalry between the teams over the years.

"I am not taking anything away from the KC team, I expected my team to go out there and play true to form. The team that makes the least mistakes will win the game, but we are keen to reach our second schoolboy football final," Francis said.

Charlie Smith were strong favourites for the Manning Cup but, after losing out at the last moment to an under-rated Excelsior in the second round, they would at least like to secure the Walker Cup. However, there appears to some apathy in the camp.

Coach Jerome Waite said the boys had shown little interest since bowing out of the Manning Cup.

"The turn out at training after the Manning Cup has been very poor, it's as if the boys are on vacation or something," Waite said.

Waite's opposite number, Anthony Thompson, said his team was also suffering from the absence of a number of top players including leading goalscorer Valentine Gardener, who has been suspended.

"We will be going to win despite not having the best team, we are still going to play disciplined football because we want to be in the final," Thompson said.
