DESPITE THE inhumane condition of the Black River Market, the St. Elizabeth Parish Council, the agency responsible for the facility, says it has no information as to when the parish capital would get a new market.
At the monthly general meeting of the Council last Thursday, Supt. of Roads and Works, Kenroy Stewart, said that he had nothing new on the facility at the Black River market to report to the meeting.
Phyllis Clarke, who is the Councillor for the Black River Division, also had nothing to say about the repairs, or a new market for the community.
According to one vendor in the market, the facility has deteriorated significantly over the last eight months, because no money has been spent to repair it.
Commercial services manager of the Council, Willard Thompson, could not be reached for comment.
Writing in The Gleaner on Friday, November 8, columnist Desmond Henry, who is a resident of the parish, described the condition of the Black River market as shameful and suggested that the Parish Council should hang its head in shame.
Among the undesirable things that exist at the market are blocked drains, poor sanitary area, leaky roof, muddy drains across the flooring of the facility and a persistent foul odour.
