Pantomime and the Ward

THE EDITOR, Sir:
AS A 'first nighter' to the Christmas Pantomime over the years, I am greatly disturbed at the uncertainty which surrounds the staging of this year's Pantomime at the Ward Theatre. Last year I was frustrated at the closure of what I had come to regard as "parking for the Pantomime," resulting in a search for a parking spot "way down the street." The prospect this year seems to be even more bleak.
It seems to be a real shame that as a country we cannot accommodate something as unique, as beautiful and as entertaining as our annual pantomime in what is perhaps the most beautiful theatre in this region. Of course, this heritage, this gift to our city is now surrounded by the squalor which is now a part of the landscape of our once beautiful city of Kingston. The Ward Theatre is a treasure which we should be proud to protect, to enhance and to maintain as a showpiece to our visitors and as a source of pride to us as citizens.
Why can't we make North Parade into a place of beauty in which the grand old Ward Theatre would be a dominant feature? I leave it to the town planners to develop the parking areas.
Please let us have the Ward Theatre for this year's Pantomime.
