Twenty-six vie for PM's Youth Award For Excellence
published: Thursday | November 28, 2002

THE PRIME Minister's Youth Award for Excellence and Jamaica Youth in Concert, will take place on Sunday December 1, at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre, at 5:00 p.m.

The Award, which began in 1998, has since been conferred on 14 persons over the years, who have excelled in the areas of scholarship, the arts, sports, technology, entrepreneurship, agriculture and community service.

Dr. Donald Rhodd, Minister of State with responsibility for Youth, in the Ministry of Education, Youth and Culture, said "The Awards assist in the process of projecting a positive image of young persons."

Discussing the selection process, Dr. Rhodd said individuals should first be nominated. "We invite nominations from across the country," he said noting that "youth" refers to those persons who are 24 years and younger.

Commenting on Jamaica Youth in Concert, the State Minister said that it would be a "festive occasion as it will have different types of performances," including, song, dance and speech. Master of Ceremonies for the night will be Donald Anderson, "one of the upcoming, popular, young MC's," Dr. Rhodd pointed out.

Heading the list of performers are the Glenmuir High Festival Choir, Kingston College Speech Choir, Herbert Morrison Orchestra, Nexxus and L'Acadco.

This year, 26 youth have been nominated for the PM's Award. Past awardees of the PM's Youth Awards for Excellence include Jody-Ann Maxwell, international spelling bee champion; Neil Hanchard for scholarship, and Stephen Shaw-Naar who excelled in the arts.
