DETECTIVE CORPORAL Calvin Cowan, formerly of the Denham Town Police Station, who was shot and injured by gunmen at the Sunshine Motel on Beechwood Ave. in Kingston on November 17, succumbed to his injures in the Kingston Public Hospital yesterday.
A 44-year-old woman, Roma Bignal was shot dead by a gunman at her neighbours at Oakland Crescent, Kingston 11, yesterday. The St. Andrew South homicide team, which is investigating, has not yet established a motive for the killing.
A joint military/police pre-dawn operation in Franklin Town, East Kingston, yesterday paid rich dividends. Three illegal high-powered rifles an M-14 Norinco Sporter, an M-16 rifle and an AK-47 assault, as well as 55 rounds of assorted ammunition, were seized at premises on St. Alban's Lane, Kingston 16.
Reports are that between 5:30 and 7:30 a.m., an operation led by a Corporal of police was carried out in the Franklin Town area. During the search, the weapons and ammunition were found. No one was arrested.
According to reports from the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN), yesterday's firearm/ammo cache increased the number of illegal firearms seized since January to 432.
On Saturday, another illegal weapon was seized by the lawmen, following an attempted robbery in downtown Kingston's commercial district.
Reports are that about 2:00 p.m., a man armed with a gun, attempted to rob the conductor of a mini-bus on Pechon Street. A policeman, who was on the scene, intervened and fired several shots at the robber. The gunman ran and escaped, leaving behind a .380 semi-automatic pistol, along with an empty magazine.
Further reports are that the lawmen believed the gunman was shot and injured, during his attempt to flee the scene. The matter is being investigated by the Denham Town police.
The CCN is also reporting that the mangled body of a man was found on the Hayden main road in St Ann on Saturday night.
The dead man, about 39 years old, is of dark complexion and about 165 centimetres (5ft, 5ins) tall.
According to the CCN liaison officer for the parish, passers-by noticed the man's body on the roadway at approximately 9:15 Saturday night. Upon close inspection, the police discovered that the head had been bashed in. The body is believed to have been run over by several motor vehicles and has been removed to the morgue for post mortem and investigation. The Moneague police are investigating.
Richard Haughton, 41, of Cotton Tree Heights in St James, was killed in a motor vehicle accident on the Anchovy main road in that parish yesterday morning.
