Spanish Town police appeal for information
published: Wednesday | December 4, 2002

LINSTEAD, St. Catherine:

OF THE 20 men who were detained by the Spanish Town police in a pre-dawn raid on Monday, 18 were released, while two are being interrogated in connection with various crimes committed in the Spanish Town communities, recently.

Superintendent of Police in charge of the North St. Catherine Police division, Clifford Blake, told the media that the escalation of murders in Spanish Town prompted the police to go into every nook and cranny of the old capital for wanted men, as well as guns and other weapons.

In the meantime, the police are calling on law abiding residents of Spanish Town to come forward with whatever information they have that can bring the guilty to justice. The police said all information given to them by residents will be treated in the strictest confidence.

However, The Gleaner noted that the usual hustle and bustle in Spanish Town as the Christmas season approaches has been reduced.

Speaking with two shoppers in the Life of Jamaica Shopping Centre, Jean Briscoe and Ruddy Hyatt, they admitted that there is a definite scare of violence in Spanish Town and that they are being very cautious.

At food outlets in Spanish Town, such as Tastee patties and KFC, the long lines usually seen have been reduced, as customers and the general public seem anxious to get off the streets and to stay indoors.
