FIVE MORE illegal guns and part of an M-16 assault rifle were found yesterday during an extensive search in downtown Kingston by the Special Anti-Crime Task Force, led by Senior Supt. Donald Pusey.

The cache has increased to 11, the number of illegal firearms seized since the Government launched its new crime-fighting strategies five days ago.

A shipment of four small handguns was intercepted by the police on Monday. The following day, SSP Pusey and members of the SACTF found a JS 9mm pistol in the Greenwich Town area of Kingston.

SSP Pusey said that yesterday's guns were found in a filthy area behind the old public morgue, near the former abattoir near Producer's Road, West Kingston. The weapons seized were: two .45 calibre pistols, a .22 calibre and a .25 calibre semi-automatic pistols and a 9mm pistol. The stock was among the parts missing from the M-16 rifle.

"This find is a result of the new crime initiative. The SACTF and the Crime Management Unit are operating outside of the communities that are under curfew. All our operations are intelligence-driven," Supt. James Forbes, head of the Constabulary Communication Network, told The Gleaner yesterday.

The security forces have extended the curfews imposed on parts of Tavares Gardens (Payne Avenue) and Hannah Town (West Kingston) for another 48 hours.

In Payne Avenue, the pit which was suspected to contained human remains was searched thoroughly yesterday and investigators said they were satisfied that what they saw were the remains of animals. However, forensic experts are still investigating.

The security forces operating in Tavares Gardens were again kept busy clearing debris from open lots.

The intensive search for guns in Hannah Town did not bear any fruit either but several lots were cleared of debris.

The Force has been issuing pamphlets to members of the public inviting them to called the police for help.

One poster read: "How can we help you stop the shootings and killings, get the guns and ammunition, clear the roads, garbage and demolish abandoned buildings, get your children back in schools?"
