
Darryl Stewart, winner of a 2002 Rhodes Scholarship. - Ian Allen/Staff Photographer THE RHODES Trust has announced that the two Commonwealth Caribbean Rhodes Scholarships have been won by Darryl Stewart, a Jamaican, and Kyla Thomas, a Trinidadian.
The selection took place three days ago at Government House, Barbados, and was chaired by Sir Clifford Husbands. Other members of the selection committee were Peter Goldson, Professor Trevor Munroe, Tracy Robinson, Professor Christine Barrow, Dr. Carla Noel and Dr. Geoff Frankson.
Darryl Stewart, a 24-year-old Jamaican, lives in England. He has a first class honours degree in Mathematics-Actuarial Science from UWI, has eight CXC passes with distinction and four distinctions at GCE A' levels and two distinctions at the O' level. He is a past student of Wolmer's Boys' School, Kingston. He is an actuarial consultant at Watson Wyatt Worldwide in England and had worked with the same company in Kingston. He is a volunteer at East Surrey Hospital in England and was a Sunday School teacher.
Kyla Thomas, 23 years old, is from Chaguanas, Trinidad. She got seven distinctions at the Caribbean Examinations Council exams and five As in the General Certificate Examinations (GCE). She is in the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of the West Indies, reading for the MB B.Sc. degree.
She is a past student of the St. Augustine Girls' High School. She has won various awards and scholarships; she plays the piano and has done drama and debating.
