Hanging is still a matter for debate
published: Sunday | December 8, 2002

THE EDITOR, Sir:

PRIME MINISTER P.J. Patterson has written Opposition Leader Edward Seaga formally inviting the support of the Opposition in a bi-partisan approach to amending the Constitution to allow for the implementation of the death penalty.

What about other judicial and social institutions which have no partisan affiliation but exist soley to act as ethical watchdogs.

Not everyone agrees with the death penalty. Does the entire country always have to agree with the Government of the day?

If every member of the Government and every member of the Opposition agree with the death penalty, then Jamaica is surely heading down the point of no return.

Mr. Prime Minister it is not a political issue, but a social policy issue. The right to life and citizenship cannot be about the PNP and the JLP.

What is the point of a tertiary education in Jamaica if every individual leaves with the same opinion and the same vision.

It is crucial to debate everything that affects the way we live, whether we agree or not.

When we are all constructively involved, the result is most often a good compromise.

I am, etc
