Gunmen rob JPSCo of $1/2m
published: Tuesday | December 10, 2002

FALMOUTH, Trelawny :

ABOUT FOUR gunmen stormed the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPSCo) office in Falmouth at around 3 p.m. yesterday and made off with half-a-million dollars from the day's proceeds, as well as money stolen from customers and workers.

Two guns were also stolen from a security guard on duty and a policeman conducting business in the office.

The gunmen entered the office and commanded everyone not to move. Eyewitnesses said that the policeman and security guard attempted to challenge the robbers, but they were quickly subdued as the men had apparently targeted them. The men were most menacing in threatening to kill the security guard, who was gun-butted twice and had to seek treatment at the Falmouth Hospital.

They forced the workers and customers to the ground, then threatened to kill everybody, if the office was not opened up and the day's intake handed over. Their demands were met. The customers and workers were robbed by the men before they departed in a waiting Toyota Corolla motor car.

One customer, who had just landed in the island and went to conduct business on her way from the airport, was robbed of her handbag containing travel documents, as well as other important items along with a quantity of US currency.
