THE EDITOR, Sir:
AN ADVERTISEMENT by Boulevard Baptist Church and Radio Jamaica has come under fire from some fine citizens of this country but is such criticism warranted?
To begin, there is no subliminal message lurking anywhere. The messages are crisp, clear and succinctly delivered. The woman's prevarication at the beginning arouses the husband's suspicion and so he asks another question.
There is no doubt that the petulance of the reply precipitated the violence that ensues.
Discreetly, judiciously and unambiguously the violence is condemned. But there are two sides in an equation: eliminating an error on the one side and retaining it on the other deepens the insolubility of the problem.
Proverbs wisely reminds us that a soft answer turns away wrath but grievous words stir up anger. The advertisement is magnificent and our ailing society cries for more of that kind.
I am, etc.,
