THE EDITOR, Sir;
KINDLY ALLOW me to publicly say thank you to the many organisations and institutions who went beyond the call of duty to assist schools, students and teachers on a whole, in a time of frustration, violence and endless suffering of our students.
Thanks to The Institute of Jamaica, host to regular lunch hour concerts. This has proven very helpful for my class of 45 students, some of whom are living in volatile communities of downtown Kingston.
The students were exposed to the Alpha Band, who not only entertained them but also educated them on the history of music in Jamaica. This was greatly needed as many students returned to school after the recent elections worried, frightened and hardly settled. Even the slightest sound or noise often trigger panic attacks, crying and ill feelings.
It was good then that with parents' support and the principal's permission, music from the Institute's free lunch concert in a relaxed atmosphere soothed the students. Yes, music soothes the mind, calms the spirit and heals inner wounds.
My job was made a little easier, thanks to an institution, which took time out for students.
Thanks also to The Gleaner Company Ltd, you not only accommodated my students but also provided them with refreshment. Many now would like to become future writers for your company.
I hope many such institutions/companies will follow suit, pick up the baton and go the extra mile for our students.
I am, etc.,
