Listen to the fish

THE EDITOR, Sir;
I FULLY support the idea of forming a Consultative Committee for Crime. However, I think that the composites of the Committee fell short, and it may not serve any real purpose as it is.
First of all there needs to be an independent legal mind on the committee, plus representatives of other important bodies such as the Teachers Association, and the Nurses Association and most important, the inner city communities where most of the crime and violence occurred, should have representatives on this committee, if it is to serve any useful purpose.
One cannot recommend what is to be done in a community if you do not have personal knowledge of the problems of the community, in this case the crimes, and the reasons for the crimes in the communities.
It is said that 'if fish come from the sea bottom and tell you that it is deep', you ought to believe, because you have not been there, so the people who live and may have helped breed the crimes should be able to tell it all, so that corrective steps can be recommended and taken.
I therefore, suggest that the Minister of National Security & Justice re-think the composition of the committee, if at all it is to be useful in the eradication of crime and violence in our society.
