THE NATIONAL Works Agency (NWA) has started a massive development of the town of Black River under the Urban Rural Township Road Rehabilitation and the Maintenance Programme (URTRRMP). The work includes paving, cleaning of drains, and cutting of run-away drains.
Superintendent of Roads and Works at the St. Elizabeth Parish Council, Kenroy Stewart told The Gleaner that several roads in Black River and Santa Cruz would be repaired under the programme and that several drains would also be cleaned in both major towns in the parish.
Just after the work started Secretary Manager of the Council Opal Beharie had written to the chief executive officer of the National Works Agency, Ivan Anderson to bring to his attention the Council's dissatisfaction with the repairs being undertaken under the URTRRMP by the agency.
When contacted by The Gleaner, Manager of the NWA's local office Neville Smith said the work was far advanced and attention was being placed on the rehabilitation of most of the roads and drains in the town.
He said that the work would continue on all the streets in Black River to ensure its completion before the Christmas holidays.
