Living on a busy street
published: Wednesday | December 18, 2002

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I CAN identify with the residents of Charlemont Rd in Hope Pastures as I too live nearby a busy street. I was particularly touched by one resident's genuine concern for the well-being of the speeding motorists. Let's be realistic, anywhere you drive in the Corporate Area will place you in some residential area. We must therefore search for solutions to specific problems and not burn the barn to kill the mice.

This leads to my concern with the proposed solution. The authorities plan to place speed humps at various intervals along the road. One must ask is this a reasonable solution? Many of us, with good reason, are afraid to stop at traffic signals after sundown. For these same reasons the proposed solution may be responsible for more carnage than a motorist speeding along that short stretch of road.

I guess we will just have to avoid Charlemont Rd at nights; and pray that the residents along the stretch make it home safely.

I am etc.
