THE EDITOR, Sir:
MANY Of the opinions concerning the dress of Christian women (Flair, December 9) seem to make more of a fuss over the issue than is needed.
The Christian life is not about serving self. It is not about making ourselves feel good, or about making ourselves look good to others. It is about holiness and doing the Kingdom's work of advancing the gospel.
Every part of our life, as believers, should line up with that cause.
It may be true that most women simply do not understand the effect of immodest dress on men. The arousal that can take place in men is a natural response which was first evidenced when Adam saw Eve. Ladies who show more skin than might be appropriate, may feel good that they are attractive and that men see them as such, but that is still self-serving. This is not the purpose of the believer, and it certainly does not glorify God.
The same standards of dress and behaviour apply to men, of course.
I enjoy the beauty of all women. But I am reminded of what my dad told me as a young man ... "If it's not for sale, don't advertise it."
I am etc.,
