2-y-o perishes in blaze
published: Monday | December 23, 2002

THE QUIET district of Woodpark, St. Mary, was shaken yesterday morning by the fiery death of two-year-old, Davi Treasure, who perished in a blaze which destroyed the wooden two-bedroom house in which she was left alone.

Davi was left unattended by her mother, Rose Masters. Reports are that, the infant was taken by his mother to her grandmother's home in the district on Saturday night. The police said the child was left alone at the house, with a lit candle, while the mother went to a party.

Corporal Alford Stoddart of the CCN told The Gleaner yesterday that about 11.30 p.m. the owner of the house, Irvin Brown, 70, who occupied one of the two bedrooms, was awakened by the crying of the child.

"He said he heard the child crying, but was unable to save her because the entire room was on fire," said Corporal Stoddart.

Mr. Brown made an alarm, but by the time neighbours, fire-fighters and the police got to the house, the child was already dead. Her charred remains were later removed from the scene.

Corporal Stoddart said the mother is being sought by the police for questioning.

This is the second such incident since the start of December. Two weeks ago Minnie Whit-field, one-year-old, and her four-year-old brother, Michael, were left by themselves at their home in Waterhouse, Kingston, when a fire of unknown origin engulfed the house.

Woman Constable Jean McDonald of the CCN said that since the start of the year at least 12 children have perished in separate fires throughout the island.
