The adoration of Mammon
published: Monday | December 23, 2002

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IT IS amazing how the decadence of mankind is mirrored. Christmas is the time of the year when we celebrate the coming of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, into this world. It is therefore a sacred season, a time when we consider God and our relationship with Him. When the wise men arrived at the manger, the record of Scripture is that they bowed down and worshipped the new-born King.

Christmas is a time for worship - the worship of God. Yet, this is the time when people are prevented from attending worship because they have to work. During the Christmas Season, more and more stores and businesses boast "Open on Sundays." No one stops to think that this means that the employees in these stores and businesses have to sacrifice worship to be at work, and this, during the season of worship.

In fact, the birth of Christ is used not to advance the spiritual life which He brought to the world, but the material life which He came to condemn. It was He who declared, "You cannot serve God and Mammon (the god of material wealth).

The truth is that we have changed our god, especially at Christmas time. We have begun to worship the almighty dollar. That is why the most important item in the news is not how many people are in church worshipping the Son of God, but how many billions of dollars are in circulation for the Christmas! There is no doubt about our Christmas worship - it is the adoration of Mammon! A terrible fire will one day descend upon our land.

I am, etc.,
