Rae drives away with top award

THE JAMAICA Karting Association named Peter Rae, the country's top motor racing driver, as its Sportsman of the Year at Saturday night's annual presentation ceremony held at Victoria House, Lindsay Crescent.

"Peter Rae is one of the most versatile motor racing drivers. He competes in circuit at Dover, go-kart and the JMC rallies," said the JKA president, Andrew Jackson.

Rae was also awarded for his outstanding performance in the Heavy Class, which he won.

Taking the runner-up positions were Matthew Smellie in second and Ridley Singh.

The Light Class was won by defending champion Brian Fong Yee, who was also voted the JKA Driver of the Year. Joel Jackson and Jonathan Fong Yee finished second and third respectively in this group.

Thirteen-year-old Ardenne High schoolboy, Dane Lawson, was named Rookie of the Year.

"I feel very honoured. My aim next year is to become the champion driver of the Palisadoes International Raceway, but I want to first complete my studies because school is more important," said young Lawson.

His schoolmate Joel Jackson was voted the most improved driver.

The JKA president also promised a new points system for future championships. Jackson said come next year the JKA will be adopting the Formula One points system, while a new class will be created for rookies. The participants must be between 11-15.

Guest speaker at the Function Dr. Aggrey Ions spoke about the importance of being organised. He said the people who sponsored sports in any community was part of a bigger picture.

Apart from the competitors, several media personnel and companies were recognised for their contribution to the sport.
