Taxi
drivers wreak havoc across the island published:
Monday | January 6, 2003
Taxi drivers
across the island mounted roadblocks today in protest of the increased
tax measures announced by Government last month. The increased measures
came into effect on January 1. Areas affected by the roadblocks
included St. James, St. Catherine, Clarendon and Portland, some
of which were mounted as early as 10 p.m. last night.
The once peaceful
parish of St. James was most affected, with roadblocks reported
in Mount Salem, Flankers, Humber Ave. and other communities. Police
in the Bullet Tree, Red Ground area of Old Harbour, St. Catherine
gave up on removing the blockades as every time they clear one,
another one is mounted. In Portland, police reported roadblocks
in Foreshore, Anchovy and Snow Hill while the intersection of Howard
Avenue and the Chapleton Road in Clarendon were reportedly blocked.
