THE POLICE seized 600 kilogrammes (more than 1,300 lb.) of ganja and arrested seven persons for breaches of the Dangerous Drugs Act in separate incidents in St. Elizabeth, St. Catherine and St. Ann on the weekend.
Among those charged are: Mickey Roach, 39; Jeffery Simpson, 30, and Andrew Myers, 29, of St. Elizabeth addresses, all of whom were arrested during a police operation at Chocolate Hole in the parish.
The police said that between 4:45 and 6:30 on Saturday morning, they carried out an operation in the area and found ganja weighing 50.9 kilogrammes (112 lb.) in a house occupied by the three men.
In St. Catherine, the police seized ganja weighing more than two kilogrammes (three pounds) and charged four men in connection with the find. Those charged are: Lloyd James, 29; Derral Johnson, 17; Seymour Charlton, 30; and 21-year-old Glenroy Dawkins, all of Westmeade and Bridgeport, St. Catherine addresses.
The Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) reported that about 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, James and Johnson were travelling along the Portmore causeway towards Kingston when the police stopped and searched the car in which they were travelling. Police said they found ganja in the car and charged the two men in connection with the seizure.
Charlton and Dawkins were arrested when a smaller quantity of the drug was found at a house they occupied at Westmeade. All four men are booked to appear in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
On Saturday, Area Two narcotics agents seized more than 500 kilogrammes (1,200 lb.) of the drug on the Reynolds main road in Ocho Rios, but no one was arrested in connection with that find.
The CCN reported that about 3:45 a.m. Saturday, members of the narcotics team were on patrol in the area, when they saw a Toyota Hiace minibus parked near the Reynolds Pier. They searched the vehicle and found 35 packages of ganja.
Meanwhile, a resident handed over a .38 Taurus revolver to the Waterford police in Portmore, St. Catherine, on Saturday after a man disarmed another of the weapon during an altercation. The CCN said the two men were involved in a dispute when one of them pulled a firearm. During a struggle, the armed man was disarmed and the weapon later handed over to the police.
Kemar Martin, alias 'Bun Up', a resident of Jones Town, Kingston 12, was shot dead by gunmen in the community on Saturday. The CCN said that about 3:40 p.m., Martin was seen running from the area. Shortly after, explosions were heard and he collapsed on Lincoln Avenue. Residents discovered that he had been shot in the head.
The body of 21-year-old David Brooks was found hanging by a length of cable at his home at George's Street, Westmoreland, on Saturday. The police suspect suicide.
