THE EDITOR, Sir:
THE STATE is vested with the responsibility of protecting and nurturing our wayward and unfortunate minors. Yet it seems it is failing to do so. The innocence of the world lies in the heart of our children. Should that be taken away, who knows the period of decadence we may descend into.
Jamaicans, it appears, have lost all respect for human life, which is indicated by our high murder rate. Should we rape or deny our minors their innocence, how else shall we prepare to rebuild the much-needed respect for human life in our society? If we do not stand up in support of our minors we, as a community, would have failed them too.
Let us not attempt to brush this problem under the carpet. We need to have the members of the Ministry of Health know that the best way of dealing with this problem is to openly and honestly investigate it. Lest we end up with a scandal quite similar to that being experienced by the Catholic Church.
I implore the officers of the state vested with the responsibility of protecting our minors, to approach the investigations in a pure and honourable fashion. With the intention to find the truth and in so doing improve the level of protection we offer our minors. I am indeed concerned about this problem because if our state fails to protect these youngsters who will?
I am etc.,
