Figment of the PM's imagination

THE EDITOR, Sir:
OPTIMISM IS not a bad thing when it is grounded in reality. When it is a figment of one's own imagination, however, it is a different matter.
Mr. Patterson's reference in his New Year's message to economic growth in year 2003 is a figment of his own imagination because there is nothing to suggest that the country will experience any growth in this year. In fact, all the economic indicators are pointing in the opposite direction.
Mr. Patterson would be well advised to admit that the country is in dire economic straits and take the necessary measures that are contingent upon treating a crisis situation. This is not a time for wild-eyed optimism, but for critical thinking and a radical approach which takes responsibility for the present problems and that shows an unfettered determination to solve them. Enough of the pussyfooting, Mr. Patterson. The country is bleeding.
