Build on the foundations laid, says Pickersgill
published: Tuesday | January 7, 2003

Pickersgill

IMPROVEMENTS IN 2002 to the physical infrastructure at our ports, including cruise shipping facilities, as well as productivity increases on the part of workers, helped underscore the vital contribution and further potential of shipping to the country's Gross Domestic Product.

New standards were set at the Kingston Transshipment Port, which is now recognised as a Mega Port and has received a rating of number 65 in the top 100 transshipment ports in the world.

Last year, we also saw an addition to the Maritime Sector with the development of the Port Antonio Marina.

The facility is already attracting foreign clientele in keeping with our determination to carve out a niche in the lucrative pleasure boating market.

The goal is to continue in 2003 to build on the solid foundations that have been laid and I wish for all involved in the sector a more productive and prosperous New Year.

Robert Pickersgill

Minister of Transport and Works
