AS WE reflect on the past year, the Caribbean Maritime Institute notes as one of its major achievements, an increase in the intake of students both regionally and locally. We also completed a Regional Needs Assessment and Management Audit.
Since that tragic day, September 11, 2001 we also noted that shipping has and is undergoing tremendous changes in terms of security of its onboard and Port Security Systems as well as the demands made on its human resources and this impinges on the placement of our Cadets at Sea.
Additionally, the downturn of the world economies of both developed and developing nations including that of Jamaica and the region indicates that the Shipping industry will encounter difficulties in meeting the new international requirements.
However, I believe that the resilience of the Industry will prevail and that growth will be assured. In this regard the Caribbean Maritime Institute (CMI) stands ready to provide the upgrading and training of the human resource necessary to ensure the regions continued progress of this vital arm of our economy.
