A THREE-DAY literacy conference which opened yesterday is being held at the Golden Seas in Oracabessa, St. Mary by the Moneague College in St. Ann, in association with the Jamaica All-age Schools Project (JAASP).
The meeting is being held under the theme: 'Jamaica Literacy Research and Develop-ment Centres: Promoting Partnership, Best Practices and Performance'.
Vice Principal at the college, Maureen Byfield, said the conference was geared at "engaging educators in literacy development, with a view to showcasing the research and development centres and their roles in the Jamaican literacy landscape".
Other objectives of the conference are to explore the possibilities for effective implementation of the prime mandates of the centres, and to engage in professional activities relating to the successful implementation of literacy, research and development programmes in the teachers' colleges.
The main speaker at the official opening on January 7 will be Wesley Barrett, Chief Education Officer in the Ministry of Education, Youth and Culture.
Among the activities for the conference will be workshops, field trips, and presentations on various topics, including the Ministry's mandate and vision for the literacy research and development centres.
Presenters will include Professor Toni Walters from Oakland University in Michigan, United States of America (USA); Marcia Stewart from the Joint Board of Teacher Education; Paulette Ferraria, Lecturer, University of the West Indies; and Carlis Sittol, Literacy Teacher at the Moneague Primary and Junior High School in St. Ann.
