NATIONAL WORKERS Union (NWU) Island Supervisor Vincent Morrison said yesterday that the union would dissociate itself from the remarks of one of its vice-president which was reported in Monday's Gleaner.
In the article, headlined 'NWU warns of social unrest', NWU vice-president Norman DaCosta was reported as saying that he believed there would be social unrest among working-class Jamaicans, "particularly those at the lower end of the economic ladder," if the government continued on its current economic path.
But, Mr. Morrison said Monday that Mr. DaCosta had no authority to speak on behalf of the union, his position was not supported by the union and there would be a public rebuttal of his statement before the week ends.
Mr. DaCosta is the deputy island supervisor in charge of the bauxite/alumina workers and was the only newly-elected vice-president at last year's congress of the union. Mr. Morrison is also a vice-president, and island supervisor.
