Names that contribute to societal decline
published: Thursday | January 9, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WAS reading your article titled "Amos ready to take on MoBay criminals" on January 7, when I came across something I have seen previously. The Superintendent accompanying Mr. Amos was referred to formally as Superintendent Derrick 'Cowboy' Knight. Now I know this is not the name his mother gave him upon birth. So why would a major paper use macho, or street names to identify important people in Jamaican society.

I suppose there are more pressing issues to be addressed, but personally I think you are making a minor contribution to the decline of their roles in society; term of endearment or not. I hope this officer did not earn his rank through acting like a cowboy, as this is a part of the problems facing the nation. In my estimation a certain portion of the population are slack, and should not be pandered to.

God Bless my land, Jamaica.

I am etc.,
