Good suffering for the bad
published: Friday | January 10, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I HAVE just read a letter on your website. How dare that person say 80 per cent of Jamaicans sell drugs and do crime. Do you know how many thousands of Jamaicans live in Great Britain? You have only lived here five years and this is your assumption. I suggest you go and check your facts before you "shoot your mouth off."

The fact is that 90 per cent of Jamaicans, come to this country end up doing two or more jobs, some are well under-paid. You should try to find out more about who really are the drugs dealers. There is good and bad in every nation, but to single out one nationality, and say that 80 per cent of Jamaicans are bad, and drug dealers is wrong. Are you sure you are a Jamaican? Do you know the suffering Jamaicans have been through in this country from the sixties? You a newcomer you are basically insinuating that, "now I am a lawyer I am British, I am earning a lot of money. I am above the majority of Jamaicans, so those below me are inferior".

Do you know how many young Jamaican girls, who come to this country to go to college, only to find out when they come to England the college is so expensive they have to do two jobs, and there is no one to help them in their quest for bettering themselves educationally, be-cause they are from poor backgrounds. They are also trying, honest young men about. There are a few bad ones yes, I do agree, but it is not the majority.

I am etc.,
