An unfortunate situation
published: Friday | January 10, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I READ the articles in the Sunday Gleaner of January 5, regarding the tales of abuse and sexual activity among children in various places of safety. It is unfortunate that in this day and age when the media brings us so many tales of adults coming forward after years of secret abuse while they were children, that the good Reverend and so many others still think it impossible that such things occur under their own roofs.

There are parents who deny that their children tell the truth when they gather the courage to report such incidents, and teachers and guardians who see for themselves and think that a stern word is enough action. It is good to see that the Ministry of Health is aware of the problem and attempting to address it.

However, I am concerned that persons in charge of children in all capacities need a fair amount of sensitisation to issues like these. How many children know enough to make up stories and activities like these on their own?

I am etc.,
