Bank on the Deputy
published: Saturday | January 11, 2003

Ainsley Walters, Staff Reporter

TOP American import DEPUTY'S REPORT, making his second start for trainer Philip Feanny should go two-in-a-row in this Saturday's 1100-metre St. Catherine Cup for Open Allowance runners.

Returning off a 15-month lay-up a month ago, the crack importee was slowly away at 1000 metres straight among Starter Handicap company but recovered in a flash to be in full command a furlong out, posting a nippy 58.1 while being eased down by jockey Charles Hussey.

With the carbon burnt off his pistons, DEPUTY'S REPORT, Caymanas Park's top-rated sprinter and middle distance runner two years ago before taking a crack at the breeding shed, must be the horse to be on in the seven-horse field.

Wayne DaCosta's GOINGTOKANSASCITY, the quickest of DEPUTY'S REPORT's rivals, will try stealing a march on the seven-year-old but giving away nine

pounds to the American, who hasn't carried 53.0 kilos in years, will be his undoing.

Extremely fit and returning with champion jockey Trevor Simpson replacing Brian Harding, GOINGTOKANSASCITY, looked all over a winner last time out before RAKKADASH hit top gear and grabbed him within shades of the wire at 1000 metres straight.

Simpson is forceful and if allowed to skit away down the backstretch, could get his mount to scramble home. However, Hussey knows DEPUTY'S REPORT, having been aboard the bay horse for most of his wins in 2001 and will be stalking into the lane before pouncing on DaCosta's runner.

To ensure GOINGTOKANSASCITY doesn't have things his way on the lead, Feanny has ISSEY MIYAKE toting a featherweight 48.0 kilos with Wesley Henry. Though hopelessly outclassed, the five-year-old mare's job will be to force GOINGTOKANSASCITY to either go too fast or too slow on the lead, setting it up perfectly either way for her senior stable companion.

Elsewhere on the 11-race card, Barrington Rambally's DR. R S F should is down-in-class in the 1000-metre straight ninth race for top level Claimers and should notch a long-awaited win.

The former Feanny-trained seven-year-old American led the Harry Jackson field almost to the top of the lane on Boxing Day and looks the obvious choice having slipped down to the Claiming ranks.

Other firm fancies on the card are SATISFIER to overpower PREMIER SOLUTION in the first, MINISTER ON WHEELS to go all the way in the second, FREESTYLE to trample rivals in race five and HAPHAZARD to score a long overdue victory in the sixth event.
