Cops kill 1 in arcade robbery; five escape
published: Monday | January 13, 2003

ONE OF a group of holdup men was fatally shot by police and his crony arrested and charged yesterday after they broke into the Constant Spring Vendor's Arcade in St. Andrew.

The dead man is unidentified but the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) reports that his crony, Troy Campbell, also known as 'Bulbie', 24 years old, of Love Street, Kingston 12, was charged with shooting with intent, illegal possession of firearm and ammunition, robbery with aggravation and assault occasioning bodily harm.

The CCN's metro officer reported that at about 2.45 a.m. Sunday, a group of about seven men broke into the Constant Spring Vendor's Arcade. It is reported that a security guard who accosted the men was overpowered, beaten, tied up and his service revolver and other personal property stolen.

The group of hoodlums, the CCN report states, then broke into a shop and stole an assortment of men's shoes. Another security guard who was on the premises heard the commotion and accosted the men who were loading the stolen items into a Toyota station wagon motor car. The men opened fire at the armed guard. The fire was returned, however, five of the men drove off in the vehicle leaving two of their cronies behind.

Members of a police patrol, the CCN reported, later accosted the two men in the Eastwood Park area and during an exchange of gunfire, the unidentified man was hit and Campbell apprehended. The firearm robbed from the guard along with some of the stolen loot was recovered. The injured man was taken to the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) where he was pronounced dead. The Halfway Tree CIB is investigating.
