Citizens leader set to contest Local Gov't seat
published: Monday | January 13, 2003

PORTMORE, St. Catherine:

FORTY-YEAR old president of the Greater Portmore Joint Citizens Association Council (Joint Council) Mr. Kennedy Reid has been tipped as the People's National Party candidate for the Greater Portmore North Division for the upcoming Local Government election.

Mr. Reid the man behind several innovative social and community development programmes in the Greater Portmore area is said to be the favourite choice to carry on the work, left by Councillor George Lee.

Mr. Lee has recently advised the PNP that he will not be seeking re-election in the next Local Government Election. It has been touted that Mr. Lee has fallen out of grace with the party.

Several persons are vying for the division left by Mr. Lee, a household name in the Portmore community and the man who has been chanting the call for city status for Portmore.

Influential quantity surveyor Gerald Tabias, who has been working in that division for some time, has stepped aside giving way to Mr. Reid who has been considered among several citizens association presidents in the Portmore Community as the best man for the job.

Mr. Reid is noted for his work in the ongoing development of community based organisations, founder and manager of the Portmore Community web site as well as the Portmore Disaster Management Programme.

Speaking with The Gleaner on Saturday January 11, Mr. Reid said if elected by the party, he would do his best to continue to serve the people of the division and the nation as a whole.

The people have been encouraging me to go into this new phase of leadership and I hope to give it a try.
