THE EDITOR, Sir:
SOME YEARS ago, I contacted the Turkish Embassy in Stockholm regarding visiting their country. The Swedish word for a Jamaican woman is Jamaikanska and American Amerikanska. The Turkish embassy interpreted my designation to be American and told me that Americans needed a visa and it cost $x. I corrected her and she then when off to check.
On returning, she advised me that I did not need a visa. I was puzzled and questioned if Americans needed and we did not. She advised me that it was her country's policy to require visas of the citizens of any state that required visas of Turkish citizens.
I was so impressed that I am still considering applying for Turkish citizenship. That is independence.
I am etc.,
