The slaughter house
published: Wednesday | January 15, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE CONTINUOUS unsanitary conditions under which the slaughter house is cleaned remains a disgusting problem for the residents of Waltham, in Mandeville.

Because the pits are not properly cleaned, remains of the slaughter of the animals for the day are hosed down in the afternoon and sent down the hill, through the garden of a returning resident and into the road. The effluent then continues on through the yards of the residents settling in areas where people walk and children play.

Indeed, people and vehicles are turned away from the disgusting smell and equally disgusting water. Those vehicles which venture through the water, carry the dangerous and smelly water to their destination, spreading the potential for disease throughout the town.

One returning resident who built his house for retirement has returned to England leaving his newly constructed house, because he can no longer stand the conditions under which he has been forced to live.

The shop owners are unable to sell at these times, as no one will walk or drive on the road to get to them. Residents who live nearby complain of the awful smell and others want the slaughter house moved from their community and placed "far far away!"

This intolerable situation cannot go on any longer. I am calling on the Member of Parliament, Minister John Junor, who is the Minister of Health to see to the proper cleansing of the slaughter house immediately. And please, sir, I am not speaking about the water truck that comes periodically to quickly wash off the road, I am speaking of drawing the pits and sanitising the areas with disinfectant now and on a regular basis.

I am etc.,

SALLY PORTEOUS,

JLP Councillor Caretaker

Mandeville Division,

Central Manchester
