Patterson to address opening of regional conference
published: Saturday | January 18, 2003

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC:

PRIME MINISTER P.J. Patterson will deliver the feature address at the Second Caribbean Enterprise Forum, that gets underway here on Thursday January 23.

Hosted by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) through its Programme for the Promotion of Management-Labour Co-operation (PROMALCO), the three-day conference has as its theme "Innovative Management-Labour Relations for Enterprise Competitiveness."

Organisers say the forum will provide business and trade union leaders, as well as representatives of governments and training institutions, with a number of options that could assist enterprises in maximising the benefits to be derived from the thrust towards globalisation.

"These options have been developed by PROMALCO after much research and inquiry into the way business is done regionally and internationally," according to an ILO statement.

The Second Caribbean Enterprise Forum is part of the process through which the International Labour Organisa-tion is working with social partners to demonstrate that decent work and social justice are consistent with good corporate practice, the statement added.

The Jamaica conference will also launch the Second Phase of PROMALCO, which is funded by the United States Department of Labour. Among the topics to be discussed during the three-day meeting here, are Benchmarking Caribbean Enterprise Performance in Human Resource Development, The Role of Trade Unions in Enterprise Transformation and Competitiveness and Job Security.

The Impact of HIV/AIDS on Competitiveness and Product-ivity will also be a topic discussed at the forum, the organisers said, while noting that a number of Caribbean and international presenters will attend the forum.
