Illiteracy rate is too high
published: Saturday | January 18, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

EDUCATION IS the key to success and 'upward mobility', yet the government through the Ministry of Education is doing little or nothing for adults who are limited in that aspect. The rate of illiteracy in this blessed country is too high for any government not to make it a priority amongst the problems they must tackle.

I am of the view that if this government, and further, some corporate bodies, would like to see this nation prosper, they should take a bold step in educating its adults, like for instance household helpers unable to do the basic things.

Persons not willing to attend classes and learn should not be employed. They should also get some sort of assistance from the employer by way of time off. This would go a far way to reducing illiteracy and those that were unable to achieve this before, would have a chance to reach at least the Grade 9 Achievement level of education.

The government should now assist in setting up schools for evening classes for the less fortunate at an affordable cost to accommodate the same.

In this way we could retain our teachers instead of exporting them.

I think prosperity will not come through only increasing the amount of money in circulation but through educating our citizens to achieve modest goals. This would contribute towards stability.

I am, etc.,
