THE EDITOR, Sir:I READ Tony Becca's comments on the recent Carreras Sports Awards Function in the Sunday Gleaner of January 13 with interest, and wish to commend him on an insightful analysis of the evening's programme.
Certainly the address by five-time Olympian Charmaine Crooks of Canada - with Jamaican roots - was inspiring and shows what can be done with discipline and dedication. The audience loved her presentation.
As Tony Becca also noted in the headline of his article, the idea of the night would have gone to Mrs. Terry Young Sing, the chairman of the WITCO Sports Foundation (WITCOSF) - the sister organisation in Trinidad and Tobago of Jamaica's Carreras Sports Foundation (CSF).
The idea that was thrown out was that the two organisations should initiate in a collaborative way a Caribbean Sportsman and Sportswoman award.
There are obviously many hurdles to cross but both CSF and WITCOSF are vigorously exploring the idea. It would mean that the award is a kind of super award within the Jamaican and Trinidad and Tobago awards systems. Criteria, eligibility and timing are all issues that will need to be explored in developing the concept. The question of other Caribbean territories also being involved will need to be explored.
The Carreras Sports Foun-dation would welcome ideas and suggestions in moving the project forward.
I am, etc.,
