A plea from a cane farmer
published: Tuesday | January 21, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM a cane farmer supplying cane to the Hampden Sugar Factory. My concern is about the closure of the factory that was announced recently. I would not like to see it close, likewise the rest of farmers who sell their cane to the factory because if it does, it would create more crime and poverty within the communities.

It is a fact that everyone, both old and young, in some way or the other, depend solely on the estate for their livelihood. The children would be deprived of proper education. Those persons who work on the estate all their lives, who did not get any benefit, such as housing and were not able to make any preparation for old age, due to the low income they received and were promised lands and houses.

I would like to ask this question - "Where are they going to go after spending their lives in Hampden Estate?" I would like to see the Estate turned over to the farmers - debt-free so we can continue operation. We are asking the Government for a bailout like they have given to others. Give us a chance to survive.

If the factory does not open, we the farmers have decided not to send our cane to Long Pond - No Way. We can see the gloom that hangs over the industry.

Mr. Prime Minister, we the farmers of Somerton, Hampden and surrounding areas seek your indulgence. Are you going to sit by and let the people of Somerton die for hunger. Bananas die out, factories are closing, our only income now is in the two roots of cane. Cares thou not that we perish, we need to hear your voice as when you ask for our votes.

I am, etc.,

BIRDIAN ELLIS CAMPBELL

Somerton District

St. James
